Cofact
Cofact is a prothrombin complex and contains the coagulation factors II, VII, IX and X.
Cofact is a powder which has to be dissolved before use. After being dissolved, Cofact is injected intravenously into a blood vessel.
For anticoagulation therapy, Cofact is only used if the coagulation has to be corrected immediately. This is the case in serious bleeding or emergency procedures.
Product information
-
When is Cofact used?
Cofact is used to treat or prevent bleeding.
These bleeds occur in patients with a congenital deficiency of one of the specified coagulation factors or a deficiency due to the use of specific anticoagulant medicines.
Anticoagulant medicines cause the blood to be anticoagulated to prevent thrombosis. If, prior to treatment, a patient is using anticoagulants (blood thinners) against the effects of vitamin K (vitamin K antagonists), Cofact can be used to stop the effect of the anticoagulants.
-
What dosage of Cofact is administered?
The physician treating the patient specifies the dosage of Cofact. The quantity of Cofact required depends on the reason why Cofact is prescribed.
The dosage and the frequency depend on:
- the seriousness of the situation (bleeding/procedure);
- the patient’s weight;
- the type of coagulation factor required;
- the level of the coagulation factor in the blood.
Given a congenital deficiency, it is necessary to determine the level of the coagulation factor in the blood regularly. If blood thinners are being taken (anticoagulant medicines) a blood test is used to determine the level of coagulation. These blood tests are expressed in INR. The physician treating the patient determines the desired INR level.
-
How is Cofact dissolved?
- The vial containing the powder is dissolved by adding water for injections to the vial.
- After a maximum of 10 minutes, the powder will have dissolved.
- The resultant solution is a clear, blueish colour.
- Do not use any solution that is turbid or contains deposits.
- Dependent on the dosage, more than one vial may be used.
- The content of several vials can be mixed for administration to the patient.
-
How should Cofact be stored?
- out of reach and sight of children
- in the refrigerator at 2 - 8 °C (therefore, do not freeze)
